What is Reiki?

The laying of hands for comfort or pain relief is an ancient instinct. Human touch conveys caring and love, warmth, serenity and healing. The loving act of touch is the basis for all spiritual healing techniques.

Life Force Energy is radiated from the living body as warmth and energy. It is called Ki, Chi, Prana, or Manna, original energy, vital essence or activating universal energy. In Reiki, this energy is called 'Ki'.

Ki is an essential phenomenon. It is a type of energy that determines the fundamental state of health and vitality in all life forms. Reiki works to enhance and conserve Ki by directing its movement in the body. Ki is the life force of the universe, the source of original energy. Everything that is living radiates Ki. It is the bio magnetic origin of the aura. When Ki departs the living body, life ceases.

There are differences between Reiki and other touch-healing methods. In Reiki the practitioner does not take on other people's symptoms.

The process of attunement also makes it different. It is the attunements and signs themselves that are considered Reiki. Everything that has life has Ki. Reiki attunements connect the practitioner to the limitless source in an increased way. Once you have received the attunements you will be connected with the universal healing energy, throughout your life, simply by placing your hands on yourself or another living being. Attunement also increases your life force energy. As you experience the healing energy, for yourself, or to help others, you are aware of this gift that forever changes your life in a positive way. Anyone can use the healing gift by making a simple commitment to their own health by connecting to their own spiritual source.

Easily Share the Benefits of Reiki With Others

Reiki is an ancient healing practice, combining two Japanese words Rei and Ki, which together mean Universal Life EnergyRei, represents the all-knowing or wisdom, and Ki, the unseen non-physical energy. Essentially, Ki is our spirit. Ki is obtained from the food we ingest, from sunshine, sleep and the air we breathe. The combination of all these components formulates our spirit.

The objective of practicing Reiki is to aid in the harmonization of the body, mind and spirit, by allowing the life force to flow freely through us and around us in our aura. Life force is receptive to our thoughts and feelings, therefore, when we acknowledge negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves, our life force is disrupted. When it’s disrupted, the fundamental functions of organs and tissues in our physical body are diminished. When Ki energy is low, a person is susceptible to becoming ill.

Reiki energy healing relieves stress and fosters mental and physical health

Persons wanting to learn about reiki and various forms of energy healing and about how these therapies may help them will often ask what issues or conditions may benefit from Reiki.  A response to that query can be "anything," since everything about us is shaped by vibrational energy and reiki is a simple, powerful way to balance energy patterns.

Reiki refers to energy healing methods using "universal life force energy" that have been taught in a healing tradition developed in Japan in the 1920s by Mikao Usui.  Healing with a universal life force, vital force, or spiritual energy is not unique to the reiki healing system, as other energy healing systems and spiritual healing practices have been based on similar concepts.  For those who want to hear about specific case reports from reiki recipients and practitioners there is a nice chart shared at the Reiki Medical Research website.

Alternative medicine goes mainstream

Big hospitals and clinics increasingly offer alternative therapies. Many just offer stress reducers like meditation, yoga and massage. But some offer treatments with little or no scientific basis, to patients who are emotionally vulnerable and gravely ill. The Baltimore hospital, for example, is not charging for Reiki but wants to if it can be shown to help. Other hospitals earn fees from treatments such as acupuncture, which insurance does not always cover if the purpose is not sufficiently proven. The giant HMO Kaiser Permanente pays for members to go to a Portland, Ore., doctor who prescribes ayurvedics — traditional herbal remedies from India.

Reiki and Teen Angst

Reiki and Teen Angst

By Hope Bentley, Natural Solutions

Acne, mood swings, growth spurts—we don’t mean to imply that adolescence is a disease, but sometimes it can feel that way. The flux and change that characterize the teen years can leave adolescents (and those around them) feeling out of balance. In times of stress, confusion, or illness, a little Reiki may go a long way toward smoothing out the rough spots.

Reiki, a Japanese rethinking of the “laying on of hands” school of healing, can reduce stress and gently enhance well-being. Reiki defines itself as a primordial life force, similar in spirit to prana and qi. Most Reiki practitioners work with the chakra system, the seven centers of energy in the human body that originated in yoga philosophy. Practitioners say they can make subtle shifts in their patient’s energy by gently touching the patient and sometimes by moving their hands over (but not on) the patient’s body. This noninvasive technique allows the patient to remain fully clothed.

“Reiki is great for teens because they don’t have to talk. It is rare for teens to want to tell their problems to anyone who is not their age,” says Pamela Miles, author of Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide (Penguin Group, 2006).

Miles says that Reiki works particularly well with ADD and ADHD because Reiki helps calm and balance. “Teens with ADD and ADHD respond very quickly,” says Miles. She has also seen great results for young people who have diabetes. “Reiki can help the kids release some of the negative emotions that surface in connection to treatment, and help alleviate some of the helplessness.”

Other studies show that Reiki helps reduce depression. A high school in Camden, Maine, provided Reiki treatments to its students after the school lost eight students to drowning, car accidents, and suicide in six months. The school reported that the Reiki helped students cope with their grief and distress.

One of the great things about Reiki is how easy it is to learn. Teens can learn to practice it on themselves or others—some practitioners also offer classes tailored to suit parents and teens together, in which parents and teens treat each other.

Hannah Grace Miles, Pamela Miles’ teenage daughter, has even become an advocate: “I would absolutely recommend Reiki to my friends, and I have in the past. A lot of [my friends] have expressed interest, especially at times of stress in school, like final exams or important sporting events, or at times of emotional stress.”
